J. Cole - The Warm Up (Mixtape Review)

I never heard of J. Cole before yesterday, and honestly didn't expect much from his mixtape but I was pleasantly surprised by The Warm Up. Cole is versatile and is able to rap on a variety of different topics. He doesn't need to rely on beats or hooks, I found myself truly enjoying his flow. You wont be able to tell where one verse ends and another begins, the dude just keeps on going. The best part about Cole is that he doesn't need corny rhymes to keep a verse together, which is something a lot of rappers are doing these days. I don't think you'll hear any of his tracks being played in the club but there are no bad songs here. Play it from beginning to end, rinse and repeat.

  1. Got to either the 2nd or 3rd song (after listening to him say a WHOLE BUNCH OF NONSENSE on the intro about how he won't fail) only to find myself literally throwing this CD out my window on I-80! It was after he comes out of nowhere and said something about his sex game and then followed by the line to the effect of "Ass like Serena & Trina/Have u seen her?" Goodbye...out the window....I like this site my man but this CD is flat Garbage...You must have been FADED when you heard this..I don't even have to listen to the whole thing to know it...no Rinsing here....only Washing Away

  2. Yo man thanks for the comment. I didn't rate this tape, but I can say that this cd isn't garbage. We've come to find out that with these new artists its like a lot of other shit: hit or miss. Music is the most subjective thing there is and we are just tryin' to give you the entire spectrum for people looking to branch out to other parts of hip-hop man. Some people love it, some people don't. Either way, thanks for the feed back, man.

  25. I saw him in nyu @ some benefit concert. shit was dope i think it was better live than on cd but thats how it usually goes. he's flow is unlike what i have heard in a while, his presence reflects jayz but his flow is his own and the whole cd must be heard.

    ReplyDelete
  26. losing my balance is my favorite.
this dude is better then nice & a sigh of relief for all of us panicing over who was gonna give us some real shit to listen too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Just got the mixtape, this shit is soooo dope. I really like Dead Presidents II, Grown Simba, and Dreams.

It's refreshing to hear real hip hop again.

    Keep it up J. Cole!

    ReplyDelete
  28. The dude who threw this out his window is what I call a hip-hop homo. A fag would rather throw up than fuck the tightest pussy. The lines he quoted could possibly be the weakest on the tape. But this kid J Cole brings the heat!

    ReplyDelete
  29. First of all, what kind of exaggerating loser buys a CD and throws it out of a window (first of all I'm assuming you had to take off the window screen first or it would bounce back at you).

More importantly, J. Cole's probably the hottest new rap artist by far (fuck drake that cocky bastard) definitely give each song a chance, it'll be well worth your time.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Damn after I heard drake I never thought I would here somebody that can even come close to compare. When i heard J. Cole and I was blown away. They are equally as good. Good shit my niggas.

    ReplyDelete
  31. best mix tape I have heard in at least a year...If you did not like it then you gave up on it too early...It is worth listening all the way threw

    ReplyDelete
  32. This NC rapper brought it hard with this mixtape. The next Big Thing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. im a lil wayne, drake, nas, jay z fan always hav been but J. Cole came in and tore it apart hes on some real shit he could be the next big thing whitout a doubt he can be but his music sounds underground compared to drake as hes aiming up for that POP mainstream shit. eaither way they all good making more money than us all getting heard by more people than all of us.

    ReplyDelete
  34. yoooooo...fuck dude on top--you obviously aint comin from the struggle and ya fakeness cant relate to the realist bars on the tape-i wake up n listen to this young nigga every day -my favorite song hold it down-dollar and a dream-and i get up(come on nigga are u seriously stupid to say he aint spittin..)nigga who are you j.cole is someone who us teens and future fathers can personally relate too....J.COLE I SUPPORT YOU MY NIGGA IMA BE AT YA SHOWS BRAH HOLD YA HEAD.....

  41. I QUIT! J.Cole is too nasty..there isn't one song in this mixtape dat i dont like..he is good as hell at puttin words together..everything this nigga talks about is like a story..none of dat "i got rims, cars, houses, jewelery" bullshyt..he talks about straight up TRUE shyt..and its not only wat he is saying, but also how he says it..and he has like 438 different flows like daayyyuuummmm...he nice wit it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. J.Cole is crazy reminds me of young Nas which is my favorite rapper, people try to compare him to Drake not even close..Drake just comes up with clever metaphors on some pop shit...I'm 24 and I can't relate to the shit Cole speaking about because I got through the same shit I was about to give up on hip-hop will the new hip-hop until I heard the Warm-Up it inspired me to grind harder big ups to J.Cole and nigga up top u probaly think Gucci Mane is the best rapper alive you don't know shit about hip-hop kill ya self.... I swear I walk with God but the Devil keep following me - The Badness

    J. Cole is by far thee ILLEST!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. "The Warm Up" hands down one of the most complete mixtapes ever put out period. First of all,the tracks that J COLE produced are all very smooth. He's is intelligent and his lyrics are technical he respects the legends. He's true to the hip-hop game and he's not a BACKPACK rapper like EVERY other rapper in the game he is a breathe of fresh air. Something about him I guess I trust him like a trusted Obama. lets hope he stays true to his word.

    ReplyDelete
  49. for real to all the haer this kid got it he is gonne be up thier at the top soon for showw..to the fag woow said he was wack is retarded b you dont ow hip hop

he beter then lil waynes wack shit and drake hes going to the top........no doubtt

    ReplyDelete
  50. J. Cole is a serious hip-hop artist. Fuck the hater who said that he only could listen to 3 tracks and toss it out the window. Obviously it's not Gucci Mane or some trash-ass shit that's out now. It's real shit... Anyone with ambition or trials and tribulations can relate and bump to J. Cole's shit.

    ReplyDelete
  51. This disc is quality. enough said. love from Milwaukee J.cole

    ReplyDelete
  52. A friend recommended that i hear "Lights Please." Listened to the track and i enjoyed it. J Cole is cool

    ReplyDelete
  53. J. Cole not only put together a great piece of work for what's only his 2nd mixtape but with this has also brought some hope back to hip hop. All of todays mainstream music is focused on gimics and what's hot right now aside from a few artist who don't recieve the public shine they really deserve. It's sad that many will not like this album simply because of it's message and the stories it tells rather than the random bars and punchlines that are so popular today from artist like Wayne & Niki Minaj but produce no real thoughts. Hip Hop ain't dead, just supressed by the main stream.

    ReplyDelete
  54. j.cole is real. straight up. i am a fan of hip hop and honestly majority of it has turned into rapping about drugs, money, hoes, etc etc. j.cole actually comes at you on some real shit and gives it to you like it really is. the world isn't about drugs and hoes, its more about real life & what people really go thru everyday emotionally, physically, etc. j.cole brings it to that level.. a lot of rappers haven't been able to do that and he has definetly brought hope back to hip hop. it has become so sterotypical and j.cole is breaking that cycle with the drop of the warm up. definetly not garbage... but then again that depends on your views and preferences in hip hop. if you're hyped about the underground scene then j.cole is definetly what you need to have in your CD player. i've had this CD in my car nonstop since the day i got my hands on it. addicting. listen to his lyrics and really take them into consideration... he's talkin bout real life and not some sterotypical lifestyle of rappers. come real.

    ReplyDelete
  55. the guy that said he threw the cd away must be the biggest idiot in the world, he knows nuttin about real hip hop, throw ur self off the empire state and let me kno how it feels...

favorite song in the mixtape is grown simba, i get up, dollar n a dream and royal flush..."they say im like the human body, i produce my own shyt"- royal flush.. say no more, he's the future

    ReplyDelete
  60. if u think this is garbage then most likely ur the type that thinks the New Boyz is real hip-hop. J.Cole is a true MC and this mixtape was the best of the year

    J. Cole is one of the sickest New School additions to the game. I am an artist myself and by far I listen to some of the illest. Biggie, Jay-Z, Eminem, Drake, Weezy, and J.Cole is really up there and is the future and I am dying for him to jump on suttin wit the other New School beast Drizzy Drake and for the rumors I heard bout J.Cole sounding like Drake, they styles are absolutely different, they are both lyrical genius and thats the only field they compare in.

    ReplyDelete
  62. fuck the guy on the 1st comment, this shit go hard, j cole bringin that real hip hop back

  93. People that think this is trash is crazy. He literally speaks the truth. People throwing his c.d out and everything but i bet been he reaches the top that same person will be in the same store at the same section buying a different C.d made by the same artist. Listen to all his words not just one line

    ReplyDelete
  94. Okay. I will drive back to I-80 and pick that CD back up. lol. But real talk. J.Cole? This kid is something to look out for in the future. It's not about catchy music, although one mainstream hit would really speed it all up. It's about real shit, what Cole is doing is making real shit catchy, he grinds like crazy and all you can do is respect. I don't care if you think Drake is better, you can't say Drake works as hard, J.Cole and Wayne are the hardest working artists. Cole did over 100 tracks or something like that and cut it down to 22 when he was finished? You can't say rap artists dont work hard. And J Cole is the man to prove it all. Look out for him because if he keeps getting more and more popular he will go down as a legend.

    ReplyDelete
  95. i bet j. cole posted that first comment. just to get more genuine feedback. he's smart like that.

  106. I hate to admit it but the most probable reality is that J. Cole won't get as much exposure as people signed on record labels like Young Money. Yes, people on Young Money are pretty much all Lil Wayne imitators, but they know how to sell music. J. Cole is crazy lyrically and like many of you guys have said, his flow is something to admire. Not sure if this is true but is Wale also signed to Roc Nation? If so, you can see how much exposure these dudes is getting, Jay-Z aint doing much to get their shit out there like Lil Wayne does with his people. Nevertheless though, J.Cole is a breathe of fresh air to us dudes that appreciate real music.

  108. i just heard drake's leaked thank me later album... -6/9/2010 leaked.... and this mixtape kills his whole album lolz.

Drake has good flow, nothing cleaver tho like jcole... J cole is not only a good rapper he is a solid lyricist.. witty and entertaining, drake has good flow. that's about it. He needs to study lil wayne a little bit better, not saying lil wayne is the best lyricist, but drake can learn from him to get better lol.

Drakes album is aimed towards women, always talks about himself and women and yea, too soft for me, also hes rhyming scheme is the same in almost every song, his flows are starting to sound the same, not saying hes a bad rapper just needs improvement. J cole is on a whole different level.

J cole is going to kill for his first album debut, cant wait!

  110. This mixtape is straight fiya. Right now the game has 4 incredible artists; Wale, J.Cole, Wiz Khalifa, and Ace Hood. Whoever says this mixtape sucks deserves to be absolutely demolished by everyone here
