Dolla. November 25,1987 – May 18, 2009
Dolla was born Roderick Anthony Burton II in Chicago, Illinois. He was born a twin but his brother died at birth, leaving Dolla as the only boy among two sisters. In 1991 Dolla and his family moved to California, in search of a better life. Life, however, took a turn for the worse. When Dolla was just five years old, his father decided to take his own life. This loss forced the family to move again to Atlanta, GA in an effort to recoup.
At 10 years old, Dolla was the man of the house and doing his best to support the family. Having begun writing rhymes in elementary school, he drew inspiration from his mother’s love of classic soul singers like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. At 12 years old Dolla was rapping in showcases around his hometown as part of Da Razkals Cru with friends, Scrappy and Sas. In 2001 they signed to Elektra Records and in 2003 the group released a single titled "So Fly". Unfortunately the song went nowhere and so did the group. They were dropped from the label that same year.
Fortunately being signed to Elektra allowed Dolla to develop a relationship with both Diddy and Akon. Diddy took Dolla under his wing as a model for the Shaun John clothing line, allowing him to travel the country and get his face up on the billboard above the Hyatt Hotel in Los Angeles. Akon was able to do a lot more for Dolla. Konvict Music signed a joint venture with Dolla's recently formed production company, called The Gang Entertainment. Once the joint venture was official, Dolla was signed to Jive.
Dolla was hard at work on his his debut album, Dolla & A Dream when he was gunned down in the parking lot of the Beverly Center mall in Los Angeles, California. Police later arrested Aubrey Louis Berry, 23, at Los Angeles International Airport. He is believed to be responsible for Dolla's murder.
RIP Dolla.
