This new Tame One was a hard album to review. I just couldn’t figure it out. Tame has made some good songs in the past, but this album was a fail on his part. I couldn't decipher a coherent concept this album. He basically babbles about random subjects for twelve tracks. I always try to find the good in these independent releases from the Def Jux camp, but this was ridiculous. This can hardly be considered an album. At times I could smell evidence of lyricism, but then it quickly wafted away as he changed concepts. He was off beat a lot of the album, as well. I think the only track I liked was Suede Addias, although I have no clue what he is talking about in it. First he is rapping about preists and religion then he started talking about living the life of crime. There was a clear drug theme with the mentions of acid and PCP. Maybe that's what listeners needed to be on to enjoy this, 2/5.

ReplyDeletemaybe someone familair with the underground should be reviewing these albums not someone that totally doesn't get it; because the reviewer totally missed what molly alludesto. Also wasn't al capone very religious yet he led a life of crime really where are you getting these reviewers for your underground hip hop???? remember seeds only grow in the underground. -peace b
ReplyDeleteI didn't miss anything on the Molly reference. Also, I am probably more familiar with the underground than any other reviewer from other sites. The point I was trying to make is that Tame One is unclear and unfocused on this album, purposefully or not. The result was bad music in my opinion. Maybe I need to be on drugs to understand it because I don't.

Any fan of true hip hop will enjoy this album and you should not discourage people from purchasing a jem compared to the new mainstream crap that is ruining hip hop as well as naive reviewers that dont understand underground music.
ReplyDeleteI think that the reviewer of this album had points, that yes, tame was unclear and unfocused on the album...but thats an interpretation. You could have said that its creative and dreamy. personaly, i love the album. REAL hiphop is what ever u want it to be... for me its creativity.

ReplyDeletedude,this album is awesome,and tame records and preforms under the influenced of various substances.lets here your new record.atleast he has musical integrity which most hip hop and rap does not have that.i saw tame last night,he most def was frying on mushrooms,this was a concept album which envolved alot of drug use to explain the topic matter.its a great album.

Second, he was not "off beat," and if you think so you need to go back to music theory class and check yourself because I do not hear one syllable off beat in an unintentional way. He's rhyming AROUND the beat, an abstract technique clearly influenced by Kool Keith. You are expecting the commercial rap you criticize. You say you don't like how he talks about drugs, but the track you like is "Suede Adidas", basically an anthem to PCP and drug use. Ignore this "review" and grab the album. Good stuff for the real heads out there.
