Atmosphere – Leak At Will (Mixtape Review) Late

Atmosphere is one of the most consistent and original groups in rap. Over the years Ant's beats have become more solid year after year. Slug's rhymes are relatable and usually introspective. The group has gained quite a following in the Midwest. Slug's style has changed a lot as of late. It started to really change with his most recent LP, When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That Shit Gold. Typically he raps about the problems he had with women and mistakes he made in his life, which makes it easy for listeners to connect with him. But since this last album his style transformed from what used to be first person introspective rhyming into third person story telling/narration. This style of rapping is different for him but he does it effectively. The content on this EP, Leak At Will, spans a wide spectrum covering subjects such as drugs, murder, motherhood, and troubled teens. With such intelligent and meaningful subject matter covered in this its hard to give out a bad rating. However, this EP did not have Ant's best work and Slug's raps were boring at times. I don't think anything stood out on here. This EP just has a few content-heavy story tracks that don’t fully display the talents of either Ant or Slug, 3.5/5.

Lil C-Ash - Music Is My Weapon (Mixtape Review)

I may regret saying this later but Lil C-Ash is my new favorite southern rapper. If you’re looking for some hot shit to bump in your car, you need to download this, and I mean yesterday. This mixtape is 60-80% singles and the production is top notch. Lil C-Ash has a unique voice that is full of charisma and is the complete opposite of monotone. His flow is incredible for someone I’ve never even heard of and he doesn’t ever seem to falter. The punch-lines on this are really excellent and whack rhymes are scarce. The features never outshine and the sampled beats are great. Lyrically, this mixtape isn’t very deep, but southern rappers can get away with that. The biggest complaint I have is with the fact that C-Ash is a corny ass name. Some of my favorite tracks are I’m Here, Thats Why Dey Mad, Can’t Fuck With Me, Got That Bank, In Da Bay, and I Feel Good.

Joe Budden – Padded Room (Album Review) Late As Fuck

I'm not going to pretend I've always been a fan of Joe Budden because I haven’t been. It has only been this past year where I really got turned on to him. I think he was confused as to who he was early in his career, but has grown into his own type of artist. One thing I still don't like us how he just picks fights with rappers for attention but tries to pretend its serious. He has had "beef" with half the rappers in the game right now. Not only that but his beef tracks are usually not his best quality music. They are just cries for attention. Aside from his rap social problems, his last album Padded Room has been way too slept on (including on by me). This Shit is jam packed with intelligent lyrics and deep concepts. His flow is fuckin’ tight all throughout this album.  The two tracks I didn't really like were Blood On The Wall and Adrenaline. Blood On The Wall was a weak/annoying diss track and Adrenaline was an experimental heavy metal track that felt was so out of place it was unlistenable. From there I would say I liked every single other track on here. They all had perfect production for his style and he dropped intelligent and creative lyrics on every one of them. The collabo track with The Game was hard for me to stomach because I hate when rappers kiss and make up after heavy beefs. I eventually got over it and realized it was a hot club song that I can’t help but get down to. There were a bunch of concept tracks that not only provoked thought but worked well musically. You can hate on Joe Budden as a person, but you need to respect this album as definitely one of the best of the year, 4.25/5. Better late than never, I guess.

Nifty – The Come Up (Mixtape Review)

Discovering Nifty is one of the reasons I am that I'm glad I started this blog. Filtering the garbage music out of hip hop has forced me to discover new artists and also keep a record of the music I like. Nifty is like Ace Hood and Tyga wrapped into one. He has a rapid-fire west-coast flow but also has dimension and substance in his raps. The production on this new mixtape, The Come Up, was with out a doubt album quality. The hooks on this were well crafted and addicting. The tape itself was a bit long but thorough and dynamic the whole way through. Nifty raps about the usual southern rap subjects but he has completely original, yet mainstream-ready style. He can switch his flow to adapt to any track without sounding out of place. Plain and simple this dude has it all. The standout tracks are not worth naming because this entire tape is fire! Bump it in your vehicle, 4.25/5.

Tony Yayo – Public Enemy # 1 (Mixtape Review)

Tony Yayo has released three mixtapes in the last few months and I guess it's time we reviewed one. The consensus in hip hop has been that Yayo is least talented member of G-Unit. I would have to agree with that statement (except for when 50 is really trying hard to suck a rapping). Scanning through these last three tapes you will stumble upon lazy efforts, off beat rapping, weak lyrics, but some traces of originality. Most of the songs on these tapes had decent beat selection but then Yayo just destroyed them with his rapping. Not only that but there was really only one song I like out of all three of them: They Hate. On these mixtapes his raspy voice makes for a somewhat gangster sound, but his lyrics and delivery ruin what little he has going for him. He is just not a good rapper and bores me most of the time. These tapes weren't all bad; there were some decent tracks that I don't really care to name, but they were there. However, most were bad and just plain boring. Also, I am not sure why the fuck Cormega would do a track with him. It really disappointed me as did Cormega's off beat verse on it (one of the worst I've ever heard from him in terms of delivery). Even though Yayo still puts out mostly garbage I still download his shit in hopes that he might step it up and produce some listenable music, but he always lets me down. Die hard G-unit fans will probably do everything they can to defend his laziness and sloppy delivery, but the reality is he is just not making good music and hasn't to the extent of my memory. One upset fan on Dat Piff said that this music put him to sleep, so I might think about playing tonight if I can't get to sleep before 12. Download this if you need some good bedtime stories, it might be a good alternative to counting sheep, 2/5.

Dipset - Diplomatic Reunion 3 (Mixtape Review)

This new Dipset tape Diplomatic Reunion 3 was almost album quality. It was released by Mixtape Eveloution which commands respect (if you know anything about their reputation). For the amount of garbage that gets released by Dipset this was a good selection of tracks. I don’t think there is a bad one on here (only a few mediocre tracks), which is rare when it comes to Dipset releases. All of these tracks are the bests of the recent material released by each member in Dipset. The only thing I didn’t like was Cam’ron’s rapping on some of these tracks. His slow flow only works well on certain tracks, but he'll still try it on every song he makes. J.R. Writers part showed the best of his recent work from his last few mixtapes (the last two of which are reviewed Here and Here). J.R.’s buddy Fred Money has gotten so much better since he started hopping on tracks with him a few years back; I am actually starting to like him. Hell Rell put out a nice single for the ladies and it wasn’t corny. With Jim Jones you either like him or you don’t (I’m the former) but he does what he does best by putting his deep voice and baller swag over a few nice remixes. There were some quality cuts on here and it turned out to be a above average Dipset mixtape with nice bumpablity, although most of the guys on this aren't even speaking anymore. The standouts were Huslter’s Serenade, Stunt hard, Who Could Fuck With Me, You The Baddest, Neva Stop, and Shorty’s A Rider, 3.9/5.

Young Chris - The Network (Mixtape Review)

Young Chris has had somewhat of a fucked up career whereas many fans thought he was destined to blow back when he was with Young Gunz, but for some reason he just didn’t. He fell off for a bit but as of late he has been grinding hard trying to resurrect his buzz. He has a “whisper and yell” flow which some say sounds like Jay-Z. I agree, I hear the similarity, but I can only sleep at night after listening to him thinking that Jay-Z bit his flow as opposed to the other way around. This new collabo with Don Cannon was a pretty successful project for the most part. If you like Young Chris’s flow at all you will like this tape. He really works hard on here and you can tell he is trying to regain his buzz. He maintains the Young Chris sound while still switching up his style enough to make it seem dynamic across the tape. The guest spots worked well and there were only a few tracks I wanted to pass on (anything with Peedi Crakk is an auto-skip). The most personal track on this was Grown Things. It is acoustic-based and lets listeners connect with Young C as he breaks down a nice track for the ladies. My favorite on this was the Wale and Rhymefest collabo, Kickdrums. Each rapper came real hard over the nicely produced remix of Nothing To Worry About. The Other Standouts were Free Peedi, Last 2, Not Going To Fold, Baby Girl, and Ride Wid Me, 3.9/5.

Z-Ro - My Favorite Mixtape Double Disk (Mixtape Review)

This new Z-Ro collection My Favorite Mixtape was much better than the collabo album with Chill (reviewed here), but still not top notch material from Z-Ro. He has proven he is better than this. He is still up to the same old Z-Ro content rapping about the everyday struggles in the ghetto that fans love to hear. The production was also better this time around compared to his last release. Still, I can’t help but get the feeling that he is rushing shit in the studio. This tape was all pretty much average to above average except for a few tracks. His flows were good especially on How Does It Feel, but his singing seemed a little lazy on some of the tracks. The standouts on here were Southside, Still In The Hood, Sunshine, How Does It feel, Hard Times, and Who Could It Be. The Chopped And Screwed version is good too if you are into that shit, 3.5/5.

Trife Diesel - Better Late Than Never (Album Review)

Almost a decade after his debut in hip hop, Trife Diesel (formerly Trife Da God, New York's “backbone”) has dropped solo album from out of nowhere, Better Late Than Never. For those of you who don’t know Trife, he is a member of Theodore Unit (and formerly of T.M.F.) headed by Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan. Trife has an aggressive and high energy flow that some compare to that of the late Big L. He has only a small body of work (mostly consisting of guest spots) for having been in the rap game for so long. Still, he is always reliably laying down hard verses on quality tracks. He did have what many consider a classic collabo album with Ghostface Killah in 2005, Put It On Da Line. His new solo album is exactly what I would've expected from him back in 2005, but it’s 2009 and I’m not sure if I can hold it to the same standards. Either way, this new album is packed full of diesel Trife verses, but I wouldn't say this album is classic material. The production was okay and had its highs and lows. There were only a few tracks on here I would consider heavy street bangers, the others we're concept tracks and personal tracks, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, he really needs to stop rapping with those wack ass T.M.F. dudes (Kryme Life and Tommy Whispers) and just stick to respectable rappers. There weren’t any weak tracks at all except for some of the verses from his guests. The standouts were Better Late Than Never, Powerful, Project Leaders, Respectfully, and We get In. Just when fans thought they were going to run out of gas, Trife has come back in to the game to refuel fans with some fresh Diesel, 3.9/5.

Luguz - Rock Premier 2 (Mixtape Review)

Luguz is an underground MC from Jersey. He has just come out with a mixtape called the Rock Premier 2. Luguz is really nothing special. He tries to be one of those emcees who is rapping in an attempt to resurrect the “real hip hop,” but the fact is that he just isn’t that good. Luguz is often letting up his flow and getting off beat by trying to fit his lyrics into his bars. He has some potential, but shows his weak points pretty frequently. It is clear his amateur flow still needs work. This new mixtape pays homage to the old school rap style with Luguz attempting to go in over some of the classic beats from 90's super producers Pete rock and DJ Premier. The tape was not exactly good, it was more just listenable. The standouts were You Know, Classic (featuring my boy Rain), and The Rock P 2 The Warm Up, 2.25/5.

After being under lock and key, the UK's Hip Hop Chronicle claims to be the first to have heard Raekwon's [click to read] long-awaited sequel to his 1995 debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Reportedly due in September on EMI Records, the album finds the Staten Island veteran emcee returning to his roots of cocaine-inspired raps and grimy production, with referential production and appearances.

The Scholars - Extra Credit: The Prequel To Keep Ya Grades Up (Mixtape Review)

The new mixtape Extra Credit: The Prequel To Keep Ya Grades Up from the young and talented hip hop group The Scholars blew my mind in many ways, but also let me down. These guys have the lyrical and wordplay skills down pat. I couldn't believe some of the rhymes on this, it was crazy at times. Their rapping is reminiscent of AZ's Doe Or Die. I won't go as far to say they are comparable, but there are elements on here that really brought me back. However, they have one serious weakness: they can't flow over hard banging new age beats, their style is just too low key. They are strictly backpackers and should try to learn this quickly or they will lose their focus. Both rappers have skills with wordplay, intelligent lyrics, and sick punch lines. I will be watching them closely to see if they can find their place in rap in the near future. The 5-stars in my book were: Beautiful Spring and Ghost Incredible. The other standouts on this were: Danica Patrick, Raise The Bar, Go!, Feelin’ It, no Biters Allowed, and Way To Go. There are some low points on this tape, but the highs are just too good, pick this one up guys and listen, 4/5.

Fabolous - Loso's Way (Album Review)

I don't think Fabolous has ever put out a bad CD and I'm happy to say that he still has not. Loso's Way is everything you would expect from Fabolous. There are a ton of singles here and the only song I can't stand has Jay-Z on the chorus. Paul Cain's feature was garbage, which is weird, since I loved all his previous appearences on Fab's albums. It feels like Fabolous tried a little harder to put a message in his music but he's mostly rapping about how Gucci'd up he is and still complaining about the same problems. I don't mind though because Fab really knows the formula for a hot song and his flow is as good as ever. Bleys' favorite song is Pachanga, mine is probably Lullabye. If you're mad at the score blame camel face.

JR Writer - Cinecrack 1.5 (Mixtape Review)

After hearing Summer Off on one of the Dipset mixtapes JR Writer became my favorite member. Unfortunately that's the only song I heard by him and it definitely hyped up my expectations for this review. I get the feeling that if you like JR you already know he has a different approach to rap, but the fact that he sounds like he's having a rap battle with me loses its appeal after a couple of tracks. His style is very limiting, because you can never have any content in a rap battle. JR will forever be your typical shallow gangster rapper. Once in a while he has a clever line but most of the time you're just listening to average insults. The worst part is that they sound like they are aimed at you since JR has no one else to direct them towards. He might do alright in a battle but he won't ever get signed like this.

Ro Blvd & U-N-I - A Love Supreme (Album Review)

The recent collaboration between Ro Blvd and rap duo U-N-I really surprised me. I didn’t know much about U-N-I’s, but I knew Ro Blvd would come hard with those top notch backpack rap sounds. After listening to this album a few times U-N-I seem like a mix between Cool Kids and Lupe which definitely makes for a tight sound. The album name A Love Supreme comes from the 1965 jazz record by John Coltrane. The original album is actually one of the most critically acclaimed jazz albums of all time. Considering the long history of jazz that is no easy accomplishment. To name your album after something so highly praised you need to come with your A-game. Ro holds up his end on the production tip, but U-N-I let up a bit lyrically at points, namely on Voltron and Stylin. There were a few concept tracks on here that really grew on me after a few listens: Pulp Fiction Part 1 where U-N-I put their own twist on the Quentin Tarintino classic and Halftime a slowed-down, deep rap ballad exposing some of the dramatic low points in their lives. Overall, this was a great album filled with amazing, dynamic production from Ro and original, substance-rich lyrics from U-N-I. Again, there is no point of posting the standouts because I would basically be listing the entire tracklist. This another project I hope all you guys pick up, 4.25/5.

E-Clipz - Fuck You Play Me (Mixtape Review)

E-Clipz is an underground emcee from South Carolina. He has a rapid-fire flow and that’s about it. If you have heard one of his songs you have heard them all. He has just dropped a new mixtape Fuck You Play Me. I wasn’t a big fan of the production for the most part, but some of the tracks on here are pretty dope. There is also some record scratching which works well at times, but for the most part detracts from the tape. He is usually rapping about how he deserves his piece of the rap game and how most rappers don’t deserve the success they have. However, I have yet to hear something that separates him from the rest of the rap game. He can certainly spit, but I feel like he lacks the ability to match most of the beats on this tape. It wasn’t all bad; he had some really hot tracks after he found the right beats to match his flow. The standouts on here were Get Money (really sick flow), That Nice, Jackin For Heat, I’m Gon Go Off, and Something’s Wrong, 3.25/5.

Micah James - Agorphobia (Mixtape Review)

I was going to post this tomorrow, but I can’t wait. It's already 4 months late. Enjoy.

Back in 2006, one of my favorite albums ever, Early Morning, was released by the Breakfast Club and Ro Blvd. The production from producer Ro Blvd was amazing (way too slept on). The Breakfast Club is composed of a few underground emcees from California, all of which were lyrically talented. Each rapper came hard with amazing lyrics and substance, one of which was Micah James. Although not my favorite of the group, he was nonetheless very good. He is a substance-rich, lyrically-creative emcee. He has a J-live/Blu (for those of you who know either) vibe and can be categorized as smooth hip hop. His introspective lyrics are so well crafted you rediscover new punch lines upon every new listen. All the production on here is chill and matches Micah’s style perfectly. I loved this mixtape. You just need to try him out and you will be hooked. I hope you guys like this as much as I did. The standout tracks are basically the entire tape, but Making My Way, Drink One More, Underage Girls, MacDope Pro, All Cats Are Grey, Light skinned, and Dream Final. This shit is so damn sick, you need this tape for the simple fact that you haven’t heard of him. Wake up bloggers it’s time to get up, hip hop is at the door. Go answer it, 4.5/5.

Killah Priest - I Killed The Devil Last Night (Mixtape Review)

If you are looking for something completely different from your average hip hop, you might want to check out Killah Priest. His music is full of thought-provoking metaphors and concepts. He uses a lot of theological/religious references and combines them with tales from the hood. The end result is music that is dark, cryptic, and yet gangster as hell. When you are in the mood to be taken away from the mainstream garbage on the radio and want to be mentally stimulated, throw on a Killah Priest album and get taken into another dimension. There is no one else who even comes close to what he does with musical concepts. This new mixtape I Killed The Devil Last Night is right in line with what you expect from him. He begins by telling listeners of how he fought with and then killed the Devil. The rest of the mixtape flashes back and forth describing the ways he humanizes the Devil as a hood-dwelling gangster. Priest reveals how he met, befriended, and then eventually had to part ways from this “Devil.” Many of his concepts on this are told in poem/story form and not in traditional rap format. This can turn many listeners off, but I feel like it is an effective way to get across his messages. This mixtape started off really strong then ended below average and it was also way too long. Priest’s weakness is that he devotes himself so much to a concept that he would rather go off beat or out of sync than abandon his message. Also, his acting in skits can get a bit corny. Lows aside, this is one of the most inventive and interesting mixtapes I have ever heard. If you can stand something radically different than what you are used to, pick this up. The standout SONGS were, The Long Ride, Wu Hoo Freestyle, Power Freestyle, Puff A Cloud, and The Coming, 3.75/5.

Memphis Bleek - Signed & Sealed (Mixtape Review)

I haven't heard about Memphis Bleek since his album 534. Honestly I thought the dude quit rapping or something after falling off so hard. This mixtape might be alright if Bleek didn't need to get back into the game but it's hardly good enough for a starving rapper. Dude should be hungry for fame but he doesn't sound like it. Bleek sounds the way he did on the album except the production on this is worse. Didn't like any of the tracks enough to hold on to it.

DX: When I spoke to Krayzie Bone back in March he said he planned to have a couple of collaborations between himself, Tech and Twista on his Coming From The Midwest compilation. So can you confirm if the three lightning-tongued legends of the Midwest will be bangin’ out some joints together for that?
Twista: Anything that them guys ever ask me to do, I’m gonna do it. So if you hear it from they mouth, it’s official. I don’t care what it is. Even if they tell you something that I don’t even know about yet it’s gon’ be official, ‘cause we got a sense of a unified movement with our style of music and how we do things. And we all from the Midwest, and I want us to be able to rep the Midwest to the fullest in the same way that the south and the west coast and everybody else [reps their region]. So, we got a renewed sense of how Hip Hop is to be represented from the Midwest.

DX: When are we gonna finally get a whole album from y’all as a trio…?
Twista: Really, it’s something I could really start getting into now. I got a couple of projects under GMG that I’m trying to knock out [first]. We got a Do Or Die project that me and Traxter are about to go in together and put that project out. And then I’m definitely gon’ try to get in with Krayzie Bone, ‘cause it’s been overdue, and we already made plans and announced it to the people. So, I definitely wanna get it in.

DX: You think it’s just gonna be you and Krayzie, or maybe you, Krayzie and Tech?
Twista: Oh nah, I’m trying to do the Bone [Thugs-N-Harmony] album. The project I’m talking about doing is I’ma be an honorary member of Bone and we just gon’ do a Bone album. It’s just Twista is gonna be a part of the group.

Twista - Category F5 (Album Review)

What has happened to Twista these days? He used to go really hard with Ruff Ryder’s on that gangster tongue-twister shit (video posted below). I guess those days are over for him. Joe Budden said it best when he pointed it out on his 15-minute track with “Twista is still tryin’ to recreate Slow Jamz.” I miss the pre-Kanye Twista and I am sure most of his male fans are missing him too. He still has a strong machine gun flow, but he won’t give up the single hunting. Roughly half of his new album is a single of some sort and aimed directly at the ladies. There is nothing wrong with making songs for the ladies, but Twista used to be a really hard MC. All I can hear when I listen to this album is: sell out. The standouts on here were Jump Off, Yo Body, Talk To Me, Misunderstood, and a Bigger Gun. This new album Category F5 (tornado reference) seemed more like a light breeze, 3/5.

Willy NorthPole - Tha Connect (Album Review)

I have been trying to figure out this Willy Northpole album for a while. He is one of the only rappers I know from Arizona that is getting a decent buzz. He had sort of a runaround with G-unit and it was rumored he was almost signed by 50 Cent. It never happened, but what did happened is that he signed to Luda’s label DTP. He released his solo LP to the acclaim of many of his fans. However, I have a very different take on the album, I thought it was garbage. I will say that Willy has a nice gangster/cocky vibe about him, but completely lacks in delivery. His monotone and tired sounding voice translated to zero rapping skills. It is 100% clear that his production carried him throughout the whole album. It was banging production the whole way through, which made me think it was going to be an epic album. I was let down badly by his Willy’s rapping skills aside from his surprisingly awesome concept track: Ghetto Tour Guide. There were a few other standout tracks on this (mostly due to production): The Life, Body Marked Up, and Hood Dreamer. I saw brief glimpses of potential on here, but until he steps his game up he will have trouble finding fans outside his local buzz in Arizona, 2.75/5.
