Cappadonna - Slang Prostitution (Album Review)

Cappadonna is a long-time Wu-affiliate. It was rumored that he became the Clan’s 9^th or 10^th member according to certain sources, after ODB’s Death. He does not have a flawless flow, but his lyrics are penetrating and original. His raps mostly cover NY street subjects. It was reported that during his hiatus from hip-hop that he wandered the streets of NY homeless and worked as a Taxi cab driver. I have mixed feelings about this new release. It feels like a lazy effort on his part, but I am not sure yet. Most of his other releases had to grow on me for a while before I like them. His style hasn’t changed much on this. He is still talking about grimy gangster subjects and his constant struggles as a b-list rapper. I felt like he let the beats get away from him at some points on this. The production on this was mediocre as expected from the low-budget Chambermusik Record label. The single Somebody’s Got To Go was definitely the best song on this. It features Cap flowing perfectly over a jazzy mobster beat. The other standouts on this were Da Vorzon, Pistachio, Savage Life, and Walk With Me. This new release will not be bringing in anymore fans for Cap, I give it a 3/5.

U-God – Dopium (Album Review)

U-God is widely accepted as the worst lyricist and least popular member of the original Wu-Tang Clan founders. Many have used him as a metric when comparing the best and worst rappers in hip-hop. Although his first album did go gold, it is not considered an album of high critical acclaim. His follow up material did not receive the same level of success as his first. However, this new album really surprised me. The production on this is some raw Wu production. It is reminiscent of the classic Wu albums. U-God’s lyrics on this are top-notch as for what he is capable of. All of the guest spots/collabo’s worked really well on here, too. We will see what others are saying, but I think this is the most consistent and strong Wu-tang release in years. I do not think this album will do well commercially, but it will definitely blow away the expectations of many skeptical Wu-tang fans. Most of the songs (aside from the remixes) have strong replay-ability. The standouts on here are Dopium, Coke, God Is Love, Magnum Force, New Classic, Rims Pokin Out, Stomp the Roach Remix, and Train Trussle basically the entire album. It is going to raise eye brows, but I am giving U-god a 4.5/5 on this. This shit is HOT.

Raekwon - Staten We Go Hard Vol. 1 and Blood On Chef's Apron (Mixtape Review)

Raekwon released one of Wu-Tang’s most famous and critically acclaimed solo albums of all time back in the 90’s: Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. I don’t think anyone familiar with hip-hop history can dispute that. Over the past few years the buzz has been building for the sequel. It is now set to be released August 11, 2009 (but you never know what might happen to the release date). Either way, if the two “appetizer” mixtapes of Staten We Go Hard Vol. 1 and Blood on Chef’s Apron--released earlier this spring--are any indication of the album quality, it is going to be another classic. Both of these tapes are excellent the entire way through. All of the collabo’s perfectly compliment Rae's style. Rae comes with top-notch lyrics, flow, and production. If you are a Raekwon/Wu fan you will satisfied with these releases to hold you over until Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2. The standout tracks are the entire track lists of both albums. I give them both 4.5/5.
