Naledge - Chicago Picasso (Album Review)

Naledge is an independent emcee from Chicago and is half of the group Kidz in the Hall. He rose in popularity after his first album with Kidz in the Hall. The album received high critical acclaim. I really enjoyed both of the singles from each of Kidz in the Hall albums “Till the Wheels Fall Off” and “Drivin’ Down the Block.” I even heard them on the radio. However, I have a hard time listening to an entire album by them. I can’t help but become bored of Naledge. His lyrics are always meaningful, but there is just something repetitive about him. I can’t really figure it out. Maybe his personality is just boring. I also feel that, even on his albums, the beats really range in their appeal. For instance, I either really like them or they just immediately bore me. Either way, I can never get through his albums without getting bored of them. His latest release falls in the same category. I enjoyed the guest features on this more than Naledge for the most part. The standouts AKA the only tracks I can stand are Cool Relax, Viva El Fantastico, Futuristic Shit, Life Styles of the Rich and Famous, and Look at them Hips. This album/mixtape gets a 3/5. Laws – Your Future Favorite Rapper (Mixtape Review)

I found this mixtape posted on MixTape Torrent and downloaded it because there were no comments on it. I usually like mixtapes that that are least popular on that site. The majority of fans on there are either Gucci or Wayne fans, or both. MTT still posts everything, but a lot of good material gets slept on, like this mixtape. Laws is an underground artist from Tampa, FL. His voice and flow reminds me of Lupe, only less annoying. Regardless of what his voice sounds like, he is definitely a talented up-and-comer as far as lyrics, flow, and substance. This mixtape was co-signed by DJ Smallz. I think it came out great, but most people will probably overlook this. I enjoyed most of the tracks on here. Laws is destined for some mainstream success in the near future. My favorite tracks on this are Free, Bring Justice, Rain, Boom, and most of all the Electric Feel Rmx. Check this one out guys, 4/5.

Mos Def – The Ecstatic (Album Review)

Mos Def has not been one of my favorite emcees in hip-hop. I am not saying he isn’t great artist, but I never really identified with him. I am not sure why. He is just one of those artists whose style I just didn’t blend with. However, his new release The Ecstatic has won me over (but only slightly). I am sure that Mos fans will be ecstatic with the release of this new album. The mood on this album is strictly positive/uplifting and he reminds you with “having a good time…every daaay” repeated a few times throughout. Mos can seem corny at times, but I still feel like he is tasking hip-hop in the right direction. This album follows suit to Mos’s desire to be different from the rest of the hip-hop world (this may have been what kept me away from him earlier in his career). It is hard to predict the direction that he is going to go in next: from a song about magic and the boogey man to a song entirely in Spanish. The track Auditorium is definitely the most standout track on here, featuring old school innovator: Slick Rick. Overall, the album was a great release from Mos. If you can get into his style (more than I can) you will be rewarded here, 4/5.

AZ - Legendary (Album Review)

AZ has been a consistently underrated artist in hip-hop. Most people who know of him really enjoy his music, but he never seems to be able to get mainstream success which many think he is due. His new release Legendary is not one of his best. I would say it is probably his worst. The production is average. I also think his flow took a turn for the worse on many of the tracks. There are a few good tracks on here like Dreams Come True, Good For Nothin, What Up, and Before It’s All Said and Done. Most of the others are skipable. I give it a generous 3/5. If you are feeling this you should check out any of his other releases. They are much more representative of his style.

Tanya Morgan - Brooklynati (Album Review)

Tanya Morgan is an emerging hip-hop group composed of 2 MCs and 1 MC/Producer. They have been receiving all types of critical acclaim in recent years. Their newest release Brooklynati is one of the most highly anticipated albums from an independent group this year. The album was impressive overall. The concept of the album was an imaginary city full of laid back hip-hop, called Brooklynati, which appears to be a cross between the two hometowns of each group member (Brooklyn and Cincinnati). Lyrics were on-point for this release and so was production. However, delivery was the only place where the group fell short. Each of the artists had their high and low points, but the lack of charisma made the album boring at times. The standout tracks were “Hardcore Gentleman”, “We’re Fly,” “On Our Way,” and “Never 2ndary”. I’m not sure what hardcore gentleman skit was all about when they were talking about a group having one successful single that they replay over and over 15 times for an entire concert. It sounded like they were taking a stab at Pharcyde. Still, this album was one of the best released this year, but not THE best, like most fans were expecting. Listen to it and tell me if you agree, but I give it a 4/5.
