Yo Gotti - Trap-A-Thon (Mixtape Review)

I've definitely been sleeping on Yo-Gotti and after listening to this mixtape I think I know why. Gotti isn't deep, hes just another rapper trying to blow with a hot single. I do give him props though because I did like the tape, I just couldn't see myself listening to it consistently. There aren't any bad tracks here but there are only a few songs that are radio worthy. I'll totally bump this in my car with the bass up, just not sure how often.

About the Review Ratings At Lyrics First

I’d like to explain about the rating system on this blog. The admins of this site have been listening to rap/hip-hop music for over a decade. We have listened to thousands and thousands of albums and mixtapes from the full range of hip-hop artists. You can trust that we have the experience to review these tapes and albums. We also understand the differences in all the genres of hip-hop. So, each rating we give for any mixtape/album is with respect to that specific tape’s/album’s genre/category of music it falls within. There is no one category of hip-hop that is the “realest” form of hip-hop. That is a mistake that many listeners/artists make. Hip-hop is diverse animal and should be treated as such. There is no one place of its origin. There have been artists producing music from each category of hip-hop since the mid-late 80’s. However, the popularity of these groups of music grew at very different rates. To me, this is the main reason for the difference of opinion.

Slaughterhouse - Severed Heads Vol. 1-2 (Mixtape Review)

Not much can be said about this tape other than: amazing. This group features the best chemistry and member selection, I can think of, since EMC. I think it may be even more successful. My only complaint to the group is that listeners may have trouble distinguishing Crooked I from Royce. Their voice and delivery is pretty similar. Overall, I loved this tape. I would say there are a handful of 5-star songs and a bunch of 4-stars. I don’t think I disliked any of the songs. The mixtape is definitely entertaining and lyrically dynamic the entire way through. Joe Budden is actually becoming a rapper I can listen to. His 16-minute song summarizing the entire history of hip-hop was incredible. I don’t think I will ever get sick of it. I hope you all like this mixtape as much as I did. I think it is a great way to start the blog and really demonstrates what I am looking for in a mixtape. I give it a 4.5/5.
