La Coka Nostra - A Brand You Can Trust (Album Review)

La Coka Nostra is a group formed by Danny Boy of the old school Irish-American Hip Hop group House of Pain. House of Pain was most known for their chart-topping single Jump Around. However, the success of their group faded quickly after the release of their second album and as a result the group split. Recently in 2005, the founding members of House of Pain as well as some new members came together to form the group La Coka Nostra. LCN is reminiscent of Cypress Hill and has similar subject matter. All of the members in the group are white street dudes and you can tell they have a different flavor from most of the NY gangster rap tunes out right now. The members of the group who stand out most are Ill Bill and Everlast. The group’s style falls in the category of gangster rap. On their new album, A Brand You Can Trust, they reassure listeners (with the title) that their music will stay true to the gangster sound fans have come to know and love. Most of the rapping on here was consistent and rapid-fire. This album was full of hardcore uptempo production with traces of rock influence (a common trend in Everlast’s music). There was a wide spectrum of concepts on here which ranged from gun-busting to daughter-loving. Ill Bill really spits hard on most of these tracks and Everlast’s unique voice helps him stand out over the other members/guests. Aside from a few mediocre tracks on here, this was a strong release from La Coka Nostra filled with the head banging, hardcore rap tunes their fans come to expect. The standouts on this were The Stain, Hardcore Chemical, Gun In Your Mouth, Choose Your Side, and Bang Bang, 3.75/5.

Trey Songz - The Gentlemen's Club

When I see Trey Songz as a feature I tend to think that particular song has a 99% chance of being hot. This mixtape is the ultimate collection of Trey tracks. There are some old songs, new songs, and songs that you've prolly heard on the radio. Trey's version of Boyfriend number 2 is as good as the original. I don't know why Girl Tonite is on here, seeing as how it's old as fuck. I got a real Usher Confessions sort of vibe from this. Definitely some good RNB if you're into it.

Jay Rock Inspired by Wayne?

On Working With Lil Wayne: “There was an L.A. concert- I grabbed a few of my dudes and rolled backstage. We weren’t concerned about the show, wanted to see the artists and make some connections, you know? We ended up out by the tour buses after and I saw [Lil] Wayne. I told him straight up ‘I’m the new nigga in the city. I need you on a track’. He was like ‘Whatever you need, I got you’. Wayne…he’s a real nigga. He could've given me a fake number, but he didn’t. He looked out for me, like ‘Call me when you ready.’ I gave him a call and we made it happen.

Wayne inspires me. Seeing how he go in—he works like he hasn’t made it big yet. That tells me a lot. That tells me I got to go in harder too. If Wayne can still write a rhyme a day, I need to be writing two or three a day. [Laughs] I need to be hustlin’ and doing it.”

Novel - Suspended Animation (Mixtape Review)

If you don't know who this is you need to download the mixtape. Novel isn't your typical rapper, he is also a singer, songwriter, and producer. You have to respect him for that. This dude really does it all, and that's not something you see too often. I felt his flow and lyrical ability was top notch. He tries to both sing and rap and he does well. Unfortunately I don't think he has the right balance of rap and rnb on each track. One usually overtakes the other completely and leaves you wondering just what you're listening to. Often times I waited for a verse and just got another minute of chorus. This dude's doing everything drake fails at, but he needs to go to work if he wants to blow. The features on this are awesome, Message to Rhianna belongs to Ghostface, and So Much More with Papoose raises the overall rating of the tape by half a point on its own.
DL it for Pap if you're on the fence about it.

Rain - American Dreamin 2 (Mixtape Review)

Rain is an underground MC from North Carolina. He dropped out of school at age 14 and headed to New York to try his luck in the mecca of rap. Rain has a really smooth delivery and spits intelligent lyrics. His only fault may be that his flow is so low-key sometimes you can miss out on the concepts. He is not running around claiming to be a gangbanger. He tells stories from the hood that show the darker side of humanity. This new mixtape from Rain showcases his ability as a story telling rapper. Don Cannon's production works well for him by providing Rain with the chill beats that he can shine on. My favorite track on here is the Lady In The Red Dress. On this track Rain is telling an ill story about fucking with the wrong lady all over a jazzy beat that sounds like it could have been pulled out of an old black and white mystery movie. The other Standouts on this were Toast To Life, Buried With A Secret, Gettin It In, Here We Go Again, How U Want It, and It’s Alright. This shit is hot guys download this now, 4/5.
